Finding Paraben Free Skin Care Products

By Nelda Powers

You may have seen companies promoting paraben free skin care products. Indeed increasingly more major brands are advertising that what they are sell is now free of any parabens. However in order to know why people feel it is important to avoid purchasing these items and it helps to know what these things are.

You may have seen companies advertise that their brands are now free of parabens. In order to get an idea why more companies are doing this it helps to know what they are. Furthermore it also helps to know why they are used and why you have to be careful about applying them on your body and the potential effects in the long term.

It is also important to emphasise that parabens are not the only additive that can be added to a product. For example mineral oil is often added to brands and there are a number of others. This is why if you are looking for a more natural brand you need to look for something that is free of any form of preservative.

It may be tempting to ask why this is a problem. Surely if it keeps products on the shelf longer and makes them less expensive to purchase then surely this is a good thing! However while that may seem logical the reason that people are opposing them is not brand snobbery but a number of potential health issues that have been reported.

One of the most serious issues that have been reported in recent times is the fear that parabens could increase the risk of cancer. It has to be stated that research into this is ongoing and at present there is no firm conclusion on this. Therefore if you have used them in the past it is important that you are not alarmed by this.

What is true is that they can increase the risk of allergic reactions. Some people who have allergies can suffer inflammation as a result of being exposed to parabens and other types of preservatives that are used in a variety of products. While the reaction may not be instant the risk increases over time. This can also apply to conditions that are triggered by inflammation such as asthma or IBS.

Therefore you should look for products that are clearly labelled as paraben free. This does not mean choosing products that say they contain natural ingredients such as aloe vera or Vitamin E. While the product will contain those ingredients this does not exclude preservatives also being added.

The best way to be sure of finding paraben free skin care products is to look for manufacturers and brands that sell items that are organic or free from preservatives. This will reduce the risk of any allergic reactions and is your best chance of finding something natural that is appropriate for you. Look online for more information as well as customer reviews and feedback to find the right brand to suit your skin type.
