They are often hired to apply makeup and prosthetics for fashion, magazines, theatre, television, film and other major entertainment productions. The might also work in the modeling industry. Freelance makeup artists refers specifically to those who do this work independently, whether they be full- or part-time artists.

Some of these people do freelance work as a side job for extra money. Often times this is done as side work and may not interfere with what they do as a full-time job. Most production companies do hire artists for in-house work and add them to their payroll. However, there are other companies that may opt to hire freelancers as they need them for various projects.

There are a lot of techniques that may be used when it comes to product application. This line of work is considered a form of artistry. The specific methods that are used with differ and depend on several factors. Airbrushing, special effects, fashion, theatrical, high definition and bridal are some categories of application. Each one of these has its own purpose and sometimes artists are known to specialize in a certain type.

Those looking to hire a professional of this kind should request to see his or her work beforehand. Most of these individuals keep portfolios that show previous jobs they have done. It is also important to find out pricing early on as well. Because these are independent contractors, they set their own prices. The cost of services will range from person to person and job to job. Sometimes the pricing is based on makeup type, time it takes to complete the job or the products used. Price might also be determined by the number of people who are being made up.

Fashion makeup is done with emphasis on how the look will translate in magazine photography. It is also seen frequently on runway and fashion shows. This application may even be used for certain productions in television and film. It might be simple and natural, or sophisticated and elaborate. Bridal refers to that which is done for weddings. This work often includes more than one client per job. The finished look is usually a representation of the wants and needs of the client.

Airbrushing refers specifically to the technique in which products are sprayed onto the face or body. This approach gives the final look a smooth and clean appearance.

Often times the best professionals are those individuals who have received education and training in application. It is also preferred when they have experience. Freelance makeup artists may find it hard to get work until they are able to build a portfolio, good reputation and client list.
